Scientists don’t begin with certainty. They begin with questions, gather evidence, test assumptions, and stay open to changing their minds. What if you approached your own thoughts the same way?
The evidence
Treating worries as hypotheses to investigate rather than facts to accept is one of the central principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, and part of why it has helped millions develop healthier thinking patterns (Serafini et al., 2023). Curiosity calms the emotional brain; certainty often fuels it.
The practice
Choose one recurring worry. Draw a line down a page. On one side, write the evidence that supports the thought; on the other, the evidence that challenges it. What first felt like certainty often becomes possibility — and possibility is where optimism begins.
