Your brain is a prediction machine. Every moment, beneath awareness, it forecasts what comes next — and those forecasts quietly steer today’s decisions.
The evidence
Studying two large populations, researchers found the most optimistic people were not only longer-lived but significantly more likely to reach 85 and beyond (Levine et al., 2021). When your predictions include hope and possibility, you are more likely to make choices that serve your future rather than merely react to the present.
Prediction is trainable
This is why exercises that ask you to vividly imagine a good future reliably raise optimism: the brain organizes itself around what it repeatedly rehearses. The clearer the future you picture, the easier it becomes to take the small steps that move you toward it.
