Could meditation slow the way your cells age?

Here’s a genuinely wild question researchers have taken seriously: could how you use your mind affect how your cells age?

The idea

Telomeres are protective caps on the ends of our chromosomes that shorten as we age. A landmark review laid out how meditation — by lowering stress and its hormones — might, in theory, help protect them (Epel et al., 2009). Importantly, that paper is a review of possible pathways, not proof.

Where the evidence stands

Since then, trials have tested the idea directly, with mixed and preliminary results — an 18-month meditation program in older adults, for instance, didn’t show a clear telomere benefit (Age-Well trial, 2024). So this is a frontier, not a finding: an honest ‘maybe’ worth watching, not a claim to reorganize your life around. We include it because the question itself — mind reaching cell — is the heart of what mindspan is about.
