Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’m just not an optimistic person”? It’s a common belief — but it isn’t supported by the science.
The evidence
Research suggests mindfulness training can significantly increase optimism, even among people facing major life challenges (Rosenfeld et al., 2026). That fits how the brain works: every time you interrupt an unhelpful thought, notice something you’re grateful for, or choose a more balanced perspective, you strengthen the pathways that make those responses easier next time.
The practice
Spend ten minutes simply paying attention to your breathing. When your mind wanders — and it will — gently bring it back. Every return is another repetition in the mental gym. Optimism grows one thought at a time.
