It sounds almost too simple: how quickly you walk may say something about how your brain will age.
The finding
A study following nearly 4,000 adults in their 80s found that those who walked faster were 50% less likely to develop cognitive impairment and 60% less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another dementia (Jayakody et al., Neurology, 2026). Gait is not just about the legs — walking draws on the brain’s networks for planning, attention, and coordination, which is why walking speed tracks so closely with cognitive health.
A window, and a lever
Walking speed works as a window into brain aging, much like the markers in a blood panel: a readout of how the whole system is doing. It may also be a lever. Staying physically active supports the same circulation, inflammation, and stress-recovery systems tied to a healthier-aging brain — the very biology mindspan measures.
