Does your partner’s optimism affect your brain?

We usually think of optimism as personal. Emerging research suggests it may also be, in a sense, contagious — in ways that reach the brain.

The finding

In studies of couples, optimists and their partners tend to show better cognitive functioning, hinting that outlook travels through a shared environment — the routines, stress levels, sleep, and support a relationship creates (Levine et al., 2021). Connection is already one of the strongest predictors of long-term brain and body health; this suggests the people around you may shape your biology as much as your own habits do.
