Have you ever noticed your heart race during a movie — even though you knew it wasn’t real? Your brain responds powerfully to vivid mental imagery.
The evidence
Researchers have found that simply imagining your best possible future can increase optimism almost as effectively as writing about it (Boselie et al., 2023) — encouraging news if journaling isn’t your thing. Every time you mentally rehearse calm, confidence, or success, you strengthen the neural pathways that make those states easier to access when they matter.
The practice
Close your eyes for five minutes and imagine handling an upcoming challenge with calm, wisdom, and confidence. Notice the details — what you see, hear, and feel — then carry that version of yourself into your day.
