The upward spiral: how small changes compound

One of the more encouraging discoveries in behavior science is that meaningful change rarely happens all at once. Small improvements reinforce one another.

The evidence

Research suggests better sleep and greater optimism have a bidirectional relationship — better sleep can increase optimism, and greater optimism can improve sleep (Monroe et al., 2024). You don’t have to transform your life overnight; improving one habit makes the next one easier. Small wins create momentum, and momentum creates lasting change.
