When we think about protecting our arteries, we focus on diet, exercise, cholesterol. Those matter — but your outlook may matter too.
The evidence
Research reviewed by the American Heart Association suggests people with greater optimism tend to have healthier blood vessels, and some studies link optimism with slower progression of atherosclerosis, the gradual buildup of plaque inside the arteries (Levine et al., 2021). Scientists do not believe optimism prevents disease by magic — it appears to reduce the chronic stress-driven wear on the body while encouraging healthier habits.
What mindspan measures
Two of mindspan’s inflammation markers — hs-CRP and fibrinogen — are the ones this research points to. mindspan reads where yours sit relative to an optimism-favorable range.
