Does optimism speed recovery?

Healing isn’t only physical. It is also psychological — and the difference can show up in the data.

What the research shows

Studies of people recovering from serious cardiac events found that those with higher levels of optimism were less likely to be readmitted to the hospital and often experienced better recovery trajectories (Levine et al., 2021). Hopeful people tend to be more engaged in recovery — more likely to follow treatment plans, stay active when appropriate, and believe today’s effort improves tomorrow’s outcome.
