Sometimes the fastest way to change your mind is to move your body

When you’re anxious or overwhelmed, your first instinct may be to think your way out. Sometimes the better strategy is to move.

The evidence

Aerobic exercise consistently reduces anxiety, sadness, and fear while improving overall wellbeing (Basso et al., 2021), and the American Heart Association highlights physical activity as one of the pathways through which optimism supports long-term health (Levine et al., 2021). Movement increases blood flow, releases chemicals that support mood and learning, and reminds the nervous system that you’re capable of action.

The practice

Take a walk today. If thirty minutes feels like a lot, start with ten. Notice the sky, the trees, the sounds — and let your attention leave your worries for a while. Clarity often arrives after we begin moving.
