If you could choose one strategy to improve wellbeing — exercise, meditation, gratitude, visualization — which would it be? The science doesn’t pick just one.
The evidence
A network meta-analysis of more than 22,000 participants found that combining physical activity with psychological practices was associated with the greatest improvements in wellbeing (Wilkie et al., 2026). Your brain and body were never designed to work separately; strengthening both at once, each amplifies the other.
The practice
On your next walk or workout, add a mental practice: think of three things you’re grateful for, imagine your best possible self, or picture tomorrow going well. You’re not just exercising your body — you’re training your future.
